Counteracting the Effects of Radio

Waking Up to the Immune System
Green Smoothies for Post-Cancer Health

Seven years ago, the thought of being subjected to radiotherapy 5 days per week for 6 weeks completely unsettled me. Maybe because, unlike chemo, being left on my own in a large locked room to be repeatedly injected with dangerous radiation energy was an unnerving experience. What’s more, from the little I knew about radiation, I was stuck with it for life and whatever DNA damage it provoked in my body.

Actually, I couldn’t live with that. It’s not how I function. So of course I began to research ways to hopefully counteract its impact. In this regard, I would never have even considered referring to the catastrophic Chernobyl nuclear accident of 1986 for answers but, in fact, this is where my search for healing brought me the greatest hope. This is due to the fact that whilst there are different types of radiation, the ionizing kind which penetrates the body and gets to the heart of cellular DNA to do its damage, is common to both nuclear and radiotherapy radiation.

In the case of Chernobyl, millions of people were affected by the radioactive fall-out caused by the disaster as poisonous smoke from the reactor fire drifted over Ukraine and neighbouring countries in Europe. Once the immediate danger of this environmental contamination was “contained” though, medical and scientific attention turned to those who now had to endure the sinister effects of radiation poisoning. Towards this end, a British company, Earthrise UK, is said to have sent shipments of a blue-green algae powder called SPIRULINA to assist in the process. The results chronicled by the Institute of Radiation Medicine in Minsk were amazing. Children, sick from radiation exposure, were given 5 gram doses of Spirulina daily resulting in:

– a reduction in urine radioactivity levels by 50% in only 20 days
– dramatic improvement in blood cell counts in 20 days (from about 100, typical of leukaemia, to an average of 3000)
– regenerated bone marrow, spinal fluids, blood cells and liver
– improved immune systems and T-cell counts after 45 days of continuous treatment

Further studies in which the immunity of Chernobyl children was dramatically improved resulted in the awarding of a Russian patent for Spirulina in 1994, the product now officially regarded as medical food to counter radiation sickness.

So what is it about Spirulina that makes it so powerful in this detoxification process? Apparently the iodine, vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, phyto-pigments, proteins, iron and blood-strengthening properties it contains enable it to, amongst other things, shield the body from gamma radiation, bind heavy radioactive isotopes and eliminate them from the body, as well as protect the kidneys and all glandular tissue.

Needless to say, since learning about Spirulina a few years ago, it has become a component of my own wellness protocol, allowing me to feel a little less vulnerable to treatment that in supposedly “saving” me left a residual trail of potential havoc.

Another valuable tool that I’ve found to help counter the impact of radiation is CHLORELLA, which has been widely studied for its benefits, capacity to detoxify the body of heavy metals and range of protective features. It is a nutrient-dense algae from the same family as Spirulina, containing 60% protein, all of the essential amino acids required for cellular function and a range of vitamins, minerals, enzymes and fibre. What makes it stand out though is the fact that it contains the highest level of chlorophyll in any known plant which offers the body protection from ultraviolet radiation. Heavy metals such as lead, cadmium, mercury and uranium not only bind to its tough cell walls but are also prevented from being reabsorbed. At the same time, complex polysaccharides engage and build the immune system, offering protection from mutations and the formation of tumours. Its high concentration of nucleic acid is advantageous as this is a key element of cellular renewal, growth and repair. Supplementation with Chlorella during and post radiotherapy apparently helps to clear the body of radioactive particles.

Other protocols that I’ve read about to counter the effects of radiation are also worth investigating: wheat grass, barley grass, Epsom Salt baths, Baking Soda baths, mud baths, miso, boron, cilantro, beta-carotenes, apple pectin, zeolites.

We are all exposed to varying degrees of radiation in our lives at home, in our external environments, when we fly and in our jobs. On top of that, there’s the environmental and health impact of Chernobyl (1986), Fukushima (2011) and the 100 serious nuclear accidents that have occurred in the world since 2014. For those of us who have also voluntarily subjected ourselves to radiotherapy, the threat of accumulated radiation in our bodies presents a sobering reality. Fortunately there is hope and a means of taking control of our own present and future wellbeing. We just have to keep searching for answers.
